Tonga is the only Kingdom in the South Pacific and has a rather archaic parliament. Life in Tonga remains very traditional with important symbols of Tapa Cloth, Mats as Dresses and Feasting still paramount. The main island of Tongatapu is a large flat coral island almost 30km across. The island features limestone cliffs, caves, cove beaches and spectacular blowholes as well as the most extensive archaeological sites in the South Pacific. Within the lagoon of Tongatapu lie over 20 tiny coral islands which feature gorgeous beaches and lovely snorkelling sites, although most are uninhabited and only a couple have resorts. There's also reasonable surfing in the passages.

The Haapai group is a collection of 100 small islands, many of which support small traditional fishing villages. This is a laid back region with little tourism except one small resort and a handful of guesthouses, ideal for true escapism. The main island of Haapai is Lifuka, a charming flat island with lovely beaches and snorkelling in the protected reef. The islanders are extremely friendly and this is the ideal place to experience Polynesian culture.

Vavau is one of the best spots in the Southern Hemisphere for watching humpback whales which migrate here from the south to give birth and rest between July and October before heading south again for summer feeding. Neiafu Town is the hub of Vavau with its ideal protected harbour making it the Sailing capital of the South Pacific. The myriad of islands are ideal for exploring and offer some of the best snorkelling sites in the region.

The remote Niuas, 3 hours flight from Tongatapu offering idyllic beaches and traditional fishing villages. There's a guesthouse and cottages for tourists.
